Semantic Annotatiion Architecture for Accesible Multimedia Resources

    Get PDF
The semantic annotation (SA) of resources in general, and particularly of multimedia resources, is an arduous task which developments in automatic annotation mechanisms have not been able to realize until now with sufficiently accurate results. Concurrently, initiatives which focus on the accessibility and regulation of multimedia resources are becoming ever greater in number. Accessibility may be achieved, among other alternatives, by means of the subtitling and audio description of multimedia contents. This paper presents a platform which enables the SA of multimedia content when the subtitling and audio description tasks are being carried out

Proceedings of: First International Conference on Reforming Education, Quality of Teaching and Technology-Enhanced Learning: Learning Technologies, Quality of Education, Educational Systems, Evaluation, Pedagogies (TECH-EDUCATION 2010), Athens, Greece, May, 19-21, 2010Education for students with disabilities now takes place in a wide range of settings, thus, including a wider range of assistive tools. As a result of this, one of the most interesting application domains of technology enhanced learning is related to the adoption of learning technologies and designs for people with disabilities. Following this unstoppable trend, this paper presents MAS, a software platform aimed to help people with severe intellectual disabilities and cerebral paralysis in their learning processes. MAS, as a technology enhanced learning platform, provides several tools that supports learning and monitoring for people with special needs, including adaptative games, data processing and monitoring tools. Installed in a special needs education institution in Madrid, Spain, MAS provides special educators with a tool that improved students education processes.Publicad

A proof-of-concept clinical trial using mesenchymal stem cells for the treatment of corneal epithelial stem cell deficiency

Producción CientíficaOcular stem cell transplantation derived from either autologous or allogeneic donor corneoscleral junction is a functional cell therapy to manage extensive and/or severe limbal stem cell deficiencies that lead to corneal epithelial failure. Mesenchymal stem cells have been properly tested in animal models of this ophthalmic pathology, but never in human eyes despite their potential advantages. We conducted a 6- to 12-month proof-of-concept, randomized, and double-masked pilot trial to test whether allogeneic bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cell transplantation (MSCT], n = 17) was as safe and as equally efficient as allogeneic cultivated limbal epithelial transplantation (CLET), (n = 11) to improve corneal epithelial damage due to limbal stem cell deficiency. Primary endpoints demanded combination of symptoms, signs, and the objective improvement of the epithelial phenotype in central cornea by in vivo confocal microscopy. This proof-of-concept trial showed that MSCT was as safe and efficacious as CLET. Global success at 6–12 months was 72.7%–77.8% for CLET cases and 76.5%–85.7% for MSCT cases (not significant differences). Central corneal epithelial phenotype improved in 71.4% and 66.7% of MSCT and CLET cases, respectively at 12 months (P = 1.000). There were no adverse events related to cell products. This trial suggests first evidence that MSCT facilitated improvement of a diseased corneal epithelium due to lack of its stem cells as efficiently as CLET. Consequently, not only CLET but also MSCT deserves more preclinical investigational resources before the favorable results of this proof-of-concept trial could be transformed into the larger numbers of the multicenter trials that would provide stronger evidence. Associations between health-related physical fitness and self-esteem in primary school children

    Get PDF
Physical fitness plays an important role as an indicator of physical health. It is also associated with psychological well-being by showing positive relationships between its components and self-esteem in children and adolescents. However, while the musculoskeletal fitness shows clearer associations, this is not the case of cardiorespiratory fitness and body composition. This study aimed to determine the relationships between the different components of the physical fitness and self-esteem in a sample of 377 students from 9 to 13 years in Albacete. Physical fitness was measured by the 20m shuttle run, broad jump test and handgrip strength. Waist circumference and body mass index were used as body composition measures. Self-esteem was evaluated with the Multimedia and Multilingual Questionnaire for Self-Esteem Assessment, attending to its academic, athletic, socio-affective and global domains. Results showed significant positive associations of 20m shuttle run and broad jump test with global self-esteem and most of the dimensions. There were also significant correlations between body composition measures and athletic and global self-esteem. These results allow for guiding those interventions aimed at increasing self-esteem in school age and incorporating the improvement of physical fitness. The researchers Álvaro Infantes-Paniagua and María Pilar León are supported by a grant from the Spanish Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport (FPU16/00082 and FPU15/00137, respectively)

The Role of Perfectionism and Parental Expectations in the School Stress and Health Complaints of Secondary School Students

    Get PDF
Increases in school stress among adolescents are a growing concern. Although perfectionism and parental expectations have an important role in school stress, their joint influence has not been evaluated nor have analyses taken a multidimensional perspective of school stress into consideration. The aims of this study were to analyze the role of self-oriented perfectionism and parental expectations in school stress, and to explore their potential moderation effect in the associations between school stress and health complaints in adolescence. Sample consisted of 4,768 secondary-school students (52.1% girls; M = 13.74) aged 11 to 17 years (M = 13.74) from 54 high schools in Andalusia (Spain), and school stress was measured using ASQ-S questionnaire. Results show that high self-oriented perfectionism and parental expectations were significantly associated with higher levels of school stress. In addition, the three variables school stress, self-oriented perfectionism and parental expectations were significantly associated with health complaints, and self-oriented perfectionism moderated the relationship between stress of school-leisure conflict and health complaints. These findings should be taken into consideration for future research and the development of interventions aimed at reducing school stress among adolescent students

TNF-α/IL-1/NF-κB transduction pathway in human cancer prostate

    Get PDF
TNFα exerts apoptosis throughout an intracellular transduction pathway that involves the kinase proteins TRAF-2 (integration point of apoptotic and survival signals), ASK1 (pro-apoptotic protein), MEK-4 (p38 activator and metastasis suppressor gene), JNK (stress mitogen activated protein kinase) and the transcription factor AP-1. TNFα also exerts proliferation by p38 activation, or when TRAF-2 simultaneously induces the transcription factor NF-κB by NIK. NIK and p38 may also be activated by IL-1. P38 activated several transcription factors such as Elk-1, ATF-2 and NF-κB. NIK also may activate NF-κB. The aim of the present article was to evaluate the different components of this TNFα/IL-1 transduction pathway in human prostate carcinoma (PC) in comparison with normal human prostate. In prostate cancer, pro-apoptotic TNFα/AP-1 pathway is probably inactivated by different factors such as p21 (at ASK-1 level) and bcl-2 (at JNK level), or diverted towards p38 or NIK activation. IL-1α enhances proliferation through IL-1RI that activates either NIK or p38 transduction pathway. P38 and NIK activate different transcription factors related with cell proliferation and survival such as ATF-2, Elk-1 or NF-κB. In order to search a possible target to cancer prostate treatment we proposed that inhibition of several proinflamatory cytokines such as IL-1 and TNFα might be a possible target for PC treatment, because decrease the activity of all transduction pathway members that activate transcription factors as NF-κB, Elk-1 or ATF-2.Ministerio de Educación y Cienci
